31 Scariest Movie Moments Of All Time

26. The Suicide - The Omen

The Omen Suicide
20th Century Fox

It pretty much goes without saying that The Omen is a creepy film: it's about the Devil Incarnate for a start, and it includes that guaranteed chill inducer: children with bowl haircuts. Children Of The Corn also went big with a similar look, and there's a reason it works: hundreds of years of repressed nightmares over childhood haircuts coming back to haunt us all in adulthood.

The Omen also has a way with tone that really gets under your skin: take for example the scene in which Damien's nanny kills herself as some perverse pledge of allegiance. It starts with a children's fun-fair, all laughter and mirth, before cutting horribly to her grinning adoringly and throwing herself off the building. And then weirdly nobody really reacts: the camera lingers on her hanging there, children gawp half-smiling and clowns look mildly distressed, but it takes about half an hour for Gregory Peck to spring into action.

It's agonising and then you get the little cherry on top of Damien just being completely not bothered by it all. The little creep.
