Many would know Paul Sorvino from his role in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas, but to Trekkies, he will always be Nickolai Roshenko, adopted brother of Worf, who appeared in the seventh season episode of The Next Generation, Homeward. In fact, despite his success at playing gangster roles, it was a label he was keen to get away from, for fear of being typecast.

He played the parts of cops and authoritarians several times, most notably in the second season of Law & Order. He was also an accomplished sculptor, working with bronze casting. His lifelong passion seems to have been his operatic singing, which was one of the reasons he stepped away from the role on Law & Order, for fear of it damaging his voice.

He was a deputized sheriff in real life, in the state of Pennsylvania. When a young man appeared at his daughter Amanda's hotel room door and threatened to kill her, Sorvino arrived before the police. The man saw Sorvino was armed, and things de-escalated quickly. His other daughter, Academy Award-winning actress Mira Sorvino, was among those who made allegations against Harvey Weinstein, specifically that he had sexually assaulted her, then blacklisted her.

Paul Sorvino did not mince words.

He's going to go to jail. Oh yeah. That son of a bitch. Good for him if he goes, because if not, he has to meet me. And I will kill the motherf***er. Real simple. If I had known it, he would not be walking. He'd be in a wheelchair. This pig will get his comeuppance. The law will get him. He's going to go to jail and will die in jail.

Along with his family, Sorvino ran a horse-saving organization. He himself marketed a series of pasta sauces, based on his mother's recipe. He was a painter, writer, singer, sculptor, among many other things.

Sorvino passed away at the age of 83.
