Marsha Hunt was, quite frankly, Hollywood royalty long before she ever appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation as Anne Jameson, in the episode Too Short A Season. She first began working in Hollywood at age 17, having been discovered by Paramount after Zeppo Marx saw one of her modeling photos in the paper. She was quickly signed to a seven-year deal with the studio.

After departing Paramount, she signed with MGM for six years. There, she auditioned for and was told by David O. Selznick that she had won, the role of Melanie Hamilton in Gone With The Wind. She was asked to keep it to herself - then three days later, Olivia De Havilland was announced for the part. She would then become entangled with the House Unamerican Activities Committee, where she, along with many others, protested McCarthyism. This would land her on the Hollywood Blacklist by 1950, relegating her to television and stage roles for several years.

Her appearance in Star Trek was, for a time, her final acting role. That was in 1988, but she would then appear in two films in 2006. She was an outspoken activist for equality and humanitarian issues.

She died in Sherman Oaks, which she had been the honourary mayor of, at age 104. She had been the oldest living Star Trek performer up to that point, following the death of Norman Lloyd in 2021.
