Sally Kellerman starred as Dr. Elizabeth Dehner, the psychiatrist assigned to the Enterprise in The Original Series' second pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before. At this point in the '60s, Kellerman was receiving offers for many smaller parts in TV shows like this. Dehner famously doesn't survive the episode, which is something that would become a bit of a theme for Kellerman for some time.

Her real breakout role was in Robert Altman's M*A*S*H*, in which she starred as Margaret 'Hot Lips' Houlihan, a role for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. As her career began to bloom, she spoke, in hindsight, about her stubbornness. She turned down another role in an Altman film - this film turned out to be Nashville, which would have allowed her to act and sing on screen.

Thankfully, that wasn't the end for her. She would continue acting steadily into the 2010s, receiving a nomination for a Daytime Emmy for Best Actress in a Guest Role on The Young And The Restless. She wrote her memoir, and spoke of her various relationships, including that with her sister, Diana. Kellerman had previously been slated to appear in a reworking of A Christmas Carol, where she would play Mrs. Scrooge. The piece was an allegory for the AIDS crisis, which Kellerman felt was not receiving nearly enough media attention.

Kellerman had three children. Claire, who was in fact her niece, she adopted when her sister had emigrated, following her divorce. She and her husband Jonathan Krane adopted twins, Jack Donald and Hanna Vaughan, in 1989. Kellerman died from heart failure, at a care facility in Los Angeles, at the age of 84.
