White Boy Rick
Michigan Dept Of Corrections

Hopefully, the January 12th opening of '71 director Yann Demange's adaptation of Evan Hughes' The Trials Of White Boy Rick is an indication of its Oscar-worthiness rather than it being dumped in the graveyard slot.

The film, which has an impressive cast including Matthew McConaughey, Bruce Derne and Jennifer Jason Leigh, will chart the rise to criminal legend of Richard Wershe Jr, who defied the traditionally African-American ruled gangland culture of his community to achieve unprecedented power and notoriety.

His story is a particularly compelling one, of an FBI informant encouraged to drop school and snitch on Detroit's drug scene and then locked up for life in 1987 at age 17 for carrying drugs with intent to supply, thanks to a since repealed law. Intriguingly, he claims that was down to the help he gave feds to uncover police corruption in Detroit PD - the real crime he's locked up for.

Release Date: January 12th
