5 Genres That Are Dying Out (And 5 That Are Making A Comeback)

2. Big Budget Sci-Fi Epics

The time audiences were spoiled with thoughtful, big-budget sci-fi fare like 2001: A Space Odyssey or Blade Runner seemed to pass many years ago; thankfully, studios appear willing to roll the dice again. Love it or hate it (or maybe a mixture of both) Prometheus has a lot to do with that. It was a big sci-fi epic that combined big questions (the search for God, faith versus science) with b-movie action. Ridley Scott then hit a home run with The Martian, a massive critical and commercial hit that even snagged a few Oscar nominations; not bad for a movie that€™s mostly about a scientist talking to himself about maths, eating potatoes and listening to Disco. The success of Interstellar didn€™t hurt the genre either, and forthcoming sci-fi delights include Passengers with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, Replicas with Keanu Reeves and Alien: Covenant.
