5 Great British & Irish Comedy Films You Probably Missed
3. Churchill: The Hollywood Years
The tag line for this 2004 satire could easily be Jon Culshaw's opening quote, portraying Tony Blair as he did regular in the series Dead Ringers. The bewildered Prime Minster blurts "Come on, guys. You are winding me up. Winston Churchill, one of the greatest British heroes of the century, was actually an American G.I?!"
Christian Slater portrays said G.I, who must stop the invading Nazi's marrying into the British Royal Family, after he had just single-handedly captured the Enigma Machine, satirising the 2000 submarine film U-571 and Hollywood's take on the Second World War in general.
Neve Campbell plays love interest and her Majesty, Princess Elizabeth, and together they are joined by a stellar bunch of comedy talent.
The stacked cast includes Harry Enfield, Miranda Richardson, Vic and Bob, Leslie Phillips, Mackenzie Crook, Steve Pemberton, David Schneider, Sally Phillips, James Dreyfus, Antony Sher and the always brilliant, scene-stealing, Rik Mayall.
Despite its disappointing result at the box office and endless cliché of 'one ball' and Charlie Chaplin jokes. The film makes for enjoyable viewing and doesn't take itself too seriously. This ws very much a last hurrah for Peter Richardson, this being his final feature sat in the director's chair.
