5 Great Films That Defined The 90s

4. Clerks (1994)

clerks A film about those who work the worst paid and most dangerous job in America, Clerks is anything but a gritty drama. It is rather a cult-classic comedy about two friends who love nothing more than Hockey, Star Wars and loathing the world. Dante (Brian O'Halloran) is called into work on his day off and is bombarded with the realisation that he is getting old and stuck in a rut after he learns a former girlfriend is engaged to be married. The depressive Dante coupled with the eccentric and crude mannered Randall Graves (Jeff Anderson)makes this the best buddy movie of the 90s. The rapport between the characters posed such questions as "Were the construction workers on the Death Star employed by the Empire innocent when the Death Star was blown up by the rebels?" Of course the famous duo that is Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith) were born out of this movie, and lived on in the rest of Smith's Askewniverse films,Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and of course, Clerks 2. Kevin Smith famously shot Clerks on a shoestring budget at the convenience store where he worked. He shot the interiors of the convenience store at night when it was closed, and worked there during the day. He managed to muster the budget by borrowing from friends and maxing out several credit cards. The low budget and gritty black and white style didn't stop the film from being a success. It grossed $3 million worldwide and made Smith a success in Hollywood. Clerks is often ranked highly on lists of films to see before you die. In December 2012, Kevin Smith announced that Clerks 3 will hit theatres in 2014. If you have never seen Clerks and want a good laugh, watch it, you won't be disappointed.
