5 James Marsden Characters That Got Totally Shafted

1. David Sumner - Straw Dogs (2011)

David Sumner (James Marsden) and his wife Amy (Kate Bosworth) are returning back to their hometown to get away for a bit. David is busy hard at work writing his screenplay about the siege of Stalingrad. It's not long after they arrive that Amy's old boyfriend Charlie (Alexander Skarsgard) introduces himself. Charlie and his group of friends are there to help fix the roof of the Sumner's barn. Much to the displeasure of both David and Amy, they show up far earlier than the couple expected to start working with all their loud power tools. They also take far more breaks than they should to go hunting, but worst of all, they all lust after Amy. Amy calls David a coward for not standing up to them from the beginning. In an attempt to smooth their working relationship over, David gets invited by them to go hunting in the woods where they all eventually abandon him. While David is fumbling around alone in what's he's lied to as "hunting season", Charlie and one of his cronies come back to see Amy. While David is aimlessly wandering around the forest, Amy gets raped by Charlie and his goon. David gives them their severance money for what little work they've done on the roof and fires them, thereby ending it, or so he thinks. Despite wanting nothing to do with the town, David and Amy go to the local football game because it's a Friday night tradition. Jeremy Niles (Dominic Purcell) who's mentally handicapped, is coaxed into hiding in a locker room by a cheerleader whose overly protective father (James Woods) wants him to stay far away from her. Her father goes looking for her, and to keep her quiet, Jeremy accidentally suffocates her to death. In a moment of panic, he run away and gets hit by David's car. The closest hospital is too far away, so David takes it upon himself to take care of Jeremy and call for an ambulance. Her father figures out that David is hiding Jeremy through a police scanner and drives to their estate. Her father, along with Charlie and his men demand that Jeremy be given back to them. David refuses because he's finally decided to not take their crap anymore. David kills the attackers with a shotgun and nails one of their hands to the inside of the house through the window with a nail gun. He also slams the bear trap onto Charlie's head, effectively killing them all. To top it all off, in the ensuing chaos and carnage, the house is set on fire. In the end, David and Amy have killed every one of the rednecks. Unfortunately they've now gone through multiple horrific experiences, their marriage is incredibly strained and David also has to watch their house burn down with his screenplay inside. So really all of the hard work he did or at least tried to do while they were there was totally for nothing.
