3. Amazing: Moxie

Upon its release in March, Amy Poehler's fun, feisty, and fresh teen comedy garnered acclaim amongst critics and audiences alike.

Starring Hadley Robinson as sixteen-year-old student Vivian, Moxie centers on the misogyny, power imbalances, and double standards that Vivian and her peers face at their mismanaged high school.

Tired of the constant mistreatment with which many of the school's female students struggle on a day-to-day basis, Vivian begins to anonymously publish a rebellious zine that exposes the discriminatory issues facing her friends. Ultimately, the zine leads to a school-wide revolt, and students are encouraged to stand up against sexist bullies, uncaring teachers, and corrupt school officials.

While some critics did suggest that the film could have exhibited a bit more, well, moxie in its investigation of sexism, racism, and misogyny, many more complimented the movie's timely messages, relevant themes, and strong performances.

This is Poehler's second collaboration with Netflix as a director (her debut, Wine Country, was released in 2019), and we predict that the comedienne will have plenty of further opportunities to show off her strong directing skills with the streaming giant.
