Despite being set in the 1970s, BlacKkKlansman holds a significant amount of cultural relevance today. With the rising threat of the alt-right and the ever-present inequalities that still exist in America today, the themes explored within the film are worryingly pertinent.

Even the release date holds significance, being exactly 12 months since the Charlottesville rally during which, amidst the backdrop of the removal of a Confederate monument, a group of white supremacists and nationalists gathered to protest. During a confrontation with a counter demonstration, one rammed their car into the crowd resulting in the death of an anti-fascist protester.

Lee himself has spoken on the relevance of his film and during his acceptance speech for his Grand Prix publicly labelled President Donald Trump a “motherf*cker” for his failure to condemn the violence.
