5 Reasons Why The Hunchback Of Notre Dame Is Disney's Under-Appreciated Gem

1. The Villain

Now, throughout this article, you may have noticed that I've placed very little emphasis on the villain, Judge Claude Frollo. That is by no means because he is insignificant, just because he deserves the top spot on this list all to himself. Frollo, plainly, is the best villain that Disney has ever created, because he was able to do somewthing that no other villain was able to do: be truly evil. Yes, other villains did evil things, Scar kills Mufasa, The Evil Queen poisons Snow White, and so on, but nothing to the extent of Frollo. Frollo is truly a cruel, evil, narcissistic man, who cares for nothing or no one, but himself Frollo starts the movie off, right from the first scene, with villainy, chasing down and killing Quasimodo's mother. He then attempts to throw the deformed infant down a well before he is stopped but the Archdeacon, only when his soul is threatened. Frollo is an evil man and treats Quasimodo so. He teaches him that there is nothing but evil and cruelty in the world, when as far as we se, he is the only source of it. He spends the movie searching for Esmerelda, to fill his lustful desires, burning down Paris, killing innocent people, all the while believing that he is a force of good. His song, one of Disney's most memorable, Hellfire, is a very interesting one in which he sings about his lust for Esmerelda. He feels that she is an evil temptress sent by the devil to corrupt his soul, yet he knows that he wants her. However he knows that she doesn't want him, so decides that if she cant be his, she will burn in hell for her sins. If she won't have him, then she deserves to be punished. What Frollo does as a character is give us a fresh look on what villainy is. To him, he is a force of good, a force of righteousness, but we see that everything he fights for is evil and cruel. He is willing to watch a poor boy be tortured and tormented all his life, and gypsies burnt, and people killed all for his selfish needs. He is unlike any other villain because he doesn't just kill, or perform magic; he is cruel for the sake of cruelty. He hates, and lusts, and kills, and torments for his own needs, making Frollo the most villainous of any Disney creation. He supplies a villainy that you want to root against. You see his cruelty, and Quasimodo's kindness, and become even more emotionally invested in what Quasi does, hoping along the way that good will win, as you learn what truly makes a monster and what makes a man. Thank you very much for reading. If you haven't seen this movie, and this all sounds good to you go see it. If you feel that another Disney movie is better, I'd be more than happy to hear about it in the comments.
