5 Signs That The X-Men Are Coming To The Marvel Cinematic Universe
4. The Current X-Men Movie Continuity Is Ending
Back in April there were rumours that stated X-Men: Apocalypse and Wolverine 3 were going to be the end of the X-Men universe Bryan Singer created back in 2000. Given the current state of the longest-running superhero movie franchise, that seemed rather odd. Singer had been absent from the series for a whole decade, so it's not like his likely departure after Apocalypse will be the end of an era. And given the amount of effort that Days Of Future Past put into restarting continuity, to just stop seemed like a complete waste of that effort. Having a pre-existing series of films works wonders for audience engagement, allowing for references and cameos galore, but things are still flexible enough with X-Men that characters can be recast or altered if needs be. It's almost a perfect franchise situation. The only feasible situation more perfect would be if Fox were planning to reboot the series to make it fit within the MCU. Obviously the current timeline can't match the ever-complicating one of the Marvel films, so a restart to the continuity would be needed; a restart those end of the universe rumours hint at. Wolverine 3, the latest officially announced X-Men film, is due in 2017, so fits with Sony's proposed timeline - there'd be a couple of years cool-down before the X-Men rebooted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
