5 Surprising Cinematic Universes (And 5 Which Never Got Off The Ground)
4. Abandoned: 'The Dark Tower' Universe
The Dark Tower, an adaptation of the eponymous series written by Stephen King, was a huge critical and commercial disaster. Starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, this sci-fi fantasy was intended to kick-off an entire extended franchise, featuring sequels, spin-offs, and potential reboots.
However, due to the film's terrible performance at the box-office, as well as an onslaught of negative reviews from critics, this proposed series was embarrassingly scrapped.
Hoping for success, Sony had originally planned sequels, as well as a more expansive television series wherein Elba and McConaughey would reprise their roles. In fact, King remains hopeful that a sequel, which he imagines would be based on The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three, might still happen.
However, there has been very little news on the proposed franchise since 2017, and the entire series appears to be dead in the water. While many of King's works have been adapted into hugely successful critical darlings, The Dark Tower retains a reputation as one of the weakest adaptations of the author's works.
