5 Ways Marvel Could Deal With Robert Downey Jr Leaving Iron Man

4. Cameo Appearances

This could actually be a smart move for the studio. By having Tony Stark retire but still be involved in the universe, it would help reinforce the legacy that Robert Downey Jnr left behind. At the end of The Avengers, we saw Stark Tower become the base for the team and we could well see RDJ take a more authoritative and/or supervising role over the team in future movies. This option leaves the door open for Downey Jr to return if and when he is available and wants to do it. Although for me the real draw for this solution is that it allows the story of Tony Stark to be told and concluded. We have seen this character grow and for the most part, he has been the 'main character' of the whole franchise. In movies we crave narrative conclusions and this would allow us to see Tony Stark give up his position, leave the safety of earth in the hands of his Avengers colleagues and retire happy. By just having him pop up now and again, the excitement will be off the charts, even if it is just a tiny cameo to let us know he is doing alright. Plus, this opens up the inevitable possibility that in The Avengers 6, a 70 year old Tony Stark gets back in the suit one last time to help defeat Ultron. Which would definitely happen. And which would almost definitely be amazing.
