50 Comic Book Movies That Almost Got Made

12. Justice League: Mortal

With DC and WB having unveiled the blueprints for their own shared cinematic universe to rival Marvel Studios', fans have much to be excited about over the next five years as audiences will be seeing new interpretations of superheroes already seen onscreen (Batman, Green Lantern, etc.) and debuts of those never portrayed in a film before (Aquaman, Cyborg, Wonder Woman, etc). However, a few years before Joss Whedon unleashed The Avengers on the world, WB was all set to go with its own superhero ensemble piece in Justice League: Mortal. Fan reaction was loudly against it, especially considering that €“ at the time €“ Christopher Nolan€™s Dark Knight trilogy wasn€™t even halfway completed, and the idea of a competing Batman character (played by a then-unknown Armie Hammer) seemed quite ridiculous. The rest of the cast, including G.I. Joe Retaliation€™s D.J. Cotrona as Superman, inspired similar derision. When the movie collapsed due to a loss of tax breaks and millions of dollars lost just as it was about to start filming, many breathed a sigh of relief. Thankfully, Mortal€™s demise meant that Nolan€™s Dark Knight series could continue without issue.
