50 God-Tier Acting Moments Buried in Bad Movies

28. Jennifer Garner - Daredevil

Daredevil Elektra
20th Century Fox

Daredevil is a low point from the early days of the superhero genre, a mindless mess that's as poorly written as it is visually revolting. Nevertheless, it did give us one legitimately fantastic bit of casting: Jennifer Garner as Elektra.

This is a film that mostly squanders its impressive cast. Ben Affleck and Michael Clarke Duncan are miscast as Daredevil and Kingpin, respectively, while neither Colin Farrell (playing Bullseye) nor Joe Pantoliano (playing Ben Urich) get enough screen time to make their mark. Jennifer Garner is a different story.

As well as nailing the physicality of the role, Garner brings out the character's humanity and does well with the movie's emotional scenes, too. Elektra goes through a lot here; she loses her father and believes Daredevil to be the culprit, only to discover that he's actually the lawyer she's been having a romance with. Garner's nuanced work gives the movie the only semblances of emotional depth it has, and chances are, audience members will care about Elektra far more than the title character.

So good was Jennifer Garner in this role that, even though Elektra actually dies in this picture, she was resurrected and given a solo spin-off film in 2005. Unfortunately, that was also a dud, so Garner as Elektra is an addition to the long list of great superhero movie casting decisions wasted on terrible material.
