50 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 21st Century
4. Battle Royale
Plot: A high school class are sent to an island and forced to kill each other until only one survivor is left.
Alongside the aforementioned Final Destination, this brilliant J-Horror film was one of the very first horror classics of the century.
Based on the decent but self-indulgent novel of the same name (which was ultimately outclassed by its adaptation), Battle Royale takes one of the best premises in the history of the horror genre and gives it the best treatment imaginable, resulting in easily the finest Japanese horror film of the 2000s.
A flawless marriage of style and substance, Battle Royale takes a sprawling ensemble cast of relatable, well-developed characters and places them in a superbly-paced, psychologically haunting and genuinely terrifying dystopian nightmare, resulting in one of the most disturbing, creative and captivating horror flicks you'll ever watch.
While the ghastly 2003 sequel should be avoided like the plague, everyone should see Battle Royale... if they can handle it, that is. It's most certainly not for the faint of heart.
