50 Huge Movie Characters That Were Completely Miscast
29. Dane DeHaan As Major Valerian - Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets
As promised, we revisit Dane DeHaan, which feels unfair as he is clearly a talented actor who has put in some great performances in the likes of Chronicle and Lawless, but there can be no getting around the fact that he has been pushed into some projects that just didn't suit him.
It would also be unfair to focus solely on DeHaan when discussing the things wrong with the sub-par and disappointing Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. This could have been a huge sci-fi epic, but instead it fell flat and bombed.
A big part of this was having a lead actor who simply wasn't the right fit. Valerian needed to be charismatic, cocky, with a lovable rogue sort of charm you'd find in the likes of Han Solo. Unfortunately, DeHaan left a lot to be desired in this department, and when the main character comes across as lacking, it does affect the entire movie around them.
It wasn't just Valerian that was miscast, as Cara Delevigne's Sergeant Laureline opposite DeHaan was just as uninspired. The two never clicked with the kind of chemistry that could have carried a poor script and made the movie passable, instead this was just highlighted in every scene.
