50 Huge Movie Characters That Were Completely Miscast
27. Kristen Wiig As Barbara Minerva - Wonder Woman 1984
In 2017, Wonder Woman's first live-action solo movie was released, and it smashed records, brought in huge numbers at the box office, and genuinely changed the game in terms of female-led superhero stories. The sequel three years later however was worse in every single way, including the villain.
The first film may have dropped the ball slightly toward the end, hiding the excellent David Thewlis behind a horrible CGI mask, but this was a better villain than Cheetah from Wonder Woman 1984, who followed that classic trope of an invisible nobody morphing into the bad guy.
Even before the film released, there were questions raised over the casting of Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva. Obviously a legend in the comedy world thanks to the likes of Bridesmaids, Anchorman 2, and SNL, Wiig was always going to be a strange choice for an antagonist of any kind.
Initially, as the mild-mannered Barbara, there were no issues, but as the character delved deeper into her Cheetah persona, and she had to get more intimidating and pose more of a threat to Diana (Gal Gadot), there was something missing. Wiig simply didn't have the presence on screen to truly make for a compelling villain, but even in a sea of bad decisions surrounding the sequel, this one stood out as a head-scratcher.
