50 Huge Movie Characters That Were Completely Miscast

6. Scarlett Johansson As The Major - Ghost In The Shell

Over the years, Scarlett Johansson has proven herself to be a reliable box office draw, a big name that will almost sell tickets single-handedly, with Jurassic World: Rebirth proving that this is still a truth to this day.

It's understandable for a studio to see the benefits of having her in a leading role, but not here. Her casting as The Major in Ghost in the Shell, a character that in the source material is Japanese, caused controversy as it is a role that should not have been played by a Caucasian actor.

This level of whitewashing in the movie industry hardly came from this film alone, with Tilda Swinton portraying The Ancient One in Doctor Strange, among many others, also causing a similar outcry. It doesn't matter how good an actor Johansson is, or how much star power she brought to the film, she had no business in this role.

There have been defences of the casting, with some fans looking at certain loopholes from the source material, allowing for the character to take whatever form she needed, but this was an opportunity to open the door for an actor of Asian descent that should not have been passed up.
