50 Huge Movie Characters That Were Completely Miscast
43. Hugh Grant As Lofty The Oompa Loompa - Wonka
The obsession movie studios have with remaking and rebooting previously successful and beloved franchises has led to a constant churning of new versions of things audiences have seen before. In the name of trying to stand out, and at least bring something new to the table, certain details are often changed.
There are levels to this that can range from the littlest detail, to trying to subvert expectations with something completely different. Wonka falls somewhere in the middle here with its Oompa Loompa, as it certainly strayed as far away from the original movie as possible, though it was still a relatively small part of the film.
Portraying Lofty the Oompa Loompa was Hugh Grant, who isn't exactly the first name anyone would automatically think for such a character, but there are plenty of reasons for that, and all of them good.
Reportedly cast for his sense of humour, something that was utilised in trying to capture the sarcastic spirit of the Oompa Loompas in Roald Dahl's novel, the film received backlash for not casting an actor with dwarfism. Pair this with the tone clash of Hugh Grant playing the part in such a Hugh Grant way, while still singing the classic jaunty tune, and it's clear that this just didn't work.
