21. A United Kingdom
Everyone loves a fraught, historical romance, and Amma Asante's follow up to the excellent Belle is about as fraught and romantic as you're ever likely to find in the annals of history. It charts the controversial relationship between Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), the Prince of Bechuanaland who met and fell in love with London office worker Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) in 1948.
The story vibrates with racial tension against a backdrop of apartheid and Empire and it is as important now that Hollywood seems to be opening its arms slowly to diversity as it was as the empire fell. And by all accounts, the film seems to be an intelligent, politically motivated journey that never seeks to preach and never loses focus on its central love story.
Having already screened at both Toronto and London film festivals, it's already pretty well established that A United Kingdom is good - it just remains to be seen how close to the 91% general critical consensus it comes in at when it hits cinemas. You know, because nobody trusts critics any more in this post-factual world.
