41. Robin Hood

2018 In Film
Lionsgate

Had the modernised take on King Arthur worked slightly better, Robin Hood would probably have been able to enjoy a little more hype than it currently is. After all, there's a similar sort of air about the Hood legend as there was about Arthur - as if the studios have way more faith in the appeal of the property than actually exists in real life.

But the new take on the classic story does have some interesting things going for it. Firstly, there's the cast, led by Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx (in a Little John casting set to spin racist heads the world over), and also featuring Jamie Dornan (who deserves far more than Fifty Shades), Eve Hewson, the alwas excellent Ben Mendehlson as the villain and Tim Minchin as Friar Tuck. There's a lot of charm there, and hopefully it'll pay off.

And then there's the director - Otto Bathurst - who is making a long-awaited return to the big screen after the excellent Margot and having worked on such little shows as Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror in the meantime.
