For a while there, it looked suspiciously like we'd never get to see the long-mooted sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's successful sci-fi monster movie mash-up, given that it was cancelled several times before it was made. And while Del Toro is long gone from the project, Steven DeKnight - of netflix's Daredevil fame - is a strong stand-in, and hiring John Boyega for the lead is another smart move.

The studio will be hoping that they can expand the first film's foreign market popularity into a stronger domestic take for the sequel, but with the Chinese market in particular responding well to Del Toro's predecessor, signs are good that it will make money,

And in that regard, it'd be wrong to expect much of a deviation from what made the original popular with fans - so lots of action, lots of effects and Boyega as the charismatic human heart. If it works, expect more sequels and the possibility of an expanded universe (possibly also including a cross-over with the Godzilla and King Kong-starring MonsterVerse).
