50 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2022
26. Poor Things
You know what you're getting with a Yorgos Lanthimos movie - a deeply weird, unsettling story with tons of intentionally stilted dialogue and acting that's also technically pristine to boot.
Lanthimos' new movie might tout the most nutso premise of any of his works to date, as this adaptation of Alasdair Gray's 1992 novel follows Belle Baxter (Emma Stone), a woman who drowns herself to escape her abusive husband, only for him to replace her brain with that of her unborn child. Yup.
It'd be easy for a less-skilled director to screw such a provocative premise up, but it's easy to trust Lanthimos, who is kitted out with a top-drawer cast here including Willem Dafoe (as her deranged husband, fittingly), Mark Ruffalo, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, and Margaret Qualley.
Poor Things releases later this year.
25. Turning Red
Pixar's next offering is a visually stunning comedy about the pains of adolescence, as 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian Meilin "Mei" Lee (Rosalie Chiang) finds herself transforming into a giant red panda any time she feels extreme emotions.
It's easy to believe this will be another perceptive winner from the animation studio, and after their last three movies were watched at home by the vast majority of the world, it'll be neat to see a Pixar film back on the big screen once again (pandemic pending, of course).
With directorial duties being undertaken by Domee Shi, who previously helmed the memorable Pixar short Bao, there's a lot to be excited about here, even if it'll surely end up overshadowed by the studio's other, bigger release hitting a few months later, Lightyear.
Turning Red releases on March 11.
