50 Movie Death Scenes That Left You TRAUMATISED
33. Caretaker - The Longest Yard
Typically when you go into an Adam Sandler film, you know what to expect. Aside from some more recent exceptions like Uncut Gems and Hustle, there will be the silly comedy, probably a funny voice or two, and similar supporting casts made up of his friends and family.
Back in 2005 however, The Longest Yard was slightly different. He had done sports movies before, the likes of The Waterboy and Happy Gilmore, but they were comedies that happened to revolve around sports, while this remake of 1974's Longest Yard was a sports movie with some comedy sprinkled in.
As Paul Crewe, former NFL quarterback star turned Texas prison inmate, Sandler's character was to lead the team of prisoners in a game against the guards, in which they were essentially supposed to act as one big punching bag. When Crewe's team started to get good however, the prisoners were sabotaged.
Chris Rock's Caretaker, though not a player on the field, was the heart and soul of the team he would posthumously dub Mean Machine. To get the team in the run-up to the big game, Caretaker was killed in an explosion that was meant for Crewe. This came out of nowhere, particularly in a film of Adam Sandler's, and it sucked to see Caretaker, the man who was always so happy and who glued the team together, taken out in such a way.
