32. Finch - All The Bright Places
Justice Smith may be more widely known to mainstream audiences for his roles in blockbusters like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Detective Pikachu, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Amongst Thieves, but arguably his best and most powerful work comes opposite Elle Fanning in Netflix's All the Bright Places.
The two main characters met as Finch (Smith) talked Violet (Fanning) down from a potential suicide attempt, as she felt crippling survivor's guilt for the crash that killed her sister. Much of the film focuses on Finch trying to help Violet, but the perspective eventually shifts somewhat as the roles are reversed.
Finch had always been coy about his past, only offering snippets. He was called a freak by everyone he knew, he was abused as a child, and he often came close to drowning himself just to feel some small sense of control. It was a dark story that explored themes of grief and suicide, and ultimately took its darkest turn at the end.
Finch went missing, leading Violet to go looking for him where they had been swimming before. She found his car, his clothes, and his phone, as it became clear he had committed suicide. The final moments of Finch's life were ultimately left up to the audience's imagination, which arguably makes it even worse.
