After having his traumatic past alluded to but never fully explored over the course of almost a decade, Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 finally gave Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) an origin story. Though he was sidelined for much of it, the movie was unequivocally his.

Through flashbacks, the audience saw snippets of the torture that Rocket went through at the hands of Chukwudi Iwuji's High Evolutionary, something he saw as a stepping stone on the way to creating a perfect society. Once he had gotten his use out of Rocket, he and the other animals he shared a cage with were to be killed.

Lylla, Teefs, and Floor (Linda Cardellini, Asim Choudry, and Mikaela Hoover) were the only things that got Rocket through such cruelty, something that Nebula (Karen Gillan) described as being worse than what Thanos (Josh Brolin) did to her. Just as he figured a way to free them all, and just as he was about to embrace Lylla before escaping, she was shot and killed by the High Evolutionary, swiftly followed by Teefs and Floor.

These innocent animals didn't deserve to be treated like this, and Rocket didn't deserve to see the only people he loved in the world taken from him in such a cruel way. It's no surprise that this shaped much of his attitude and personality for the rest of his life.
