15. Tony Stark - Avengers: Endgame

With Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios brought to a close over ten years of storytelling, as well as the arcs of some of the franchise's greatest ever characters. One of these was Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who kicked off the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2008 with Iron Man.

Between then and Endgame 11 years later, Stark went from an egotistical, narcissistic billionaire, and the kind of man who Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) said wouldn't make the sacrifice play, to Earth's best defender and the one who snapped his fingers with the infinity stones to save the universe, knowing full well it would kill him.

Over the years, audiences grew connected with Stark like few other characters. Some watching even grew from children into adults while Iron Man and the Avengers were protecting the Earth, and so saying goodbye to him was a genuinely difficult moment.

Not only did he make the ultimate sacrifice, giving up everything that had finally made him happy, but he also he left a beautiful message behind for his daughter, played at a funeral attended by everyone, even those who never liked him. This was a rare, satisfying, and hauntingly beautiful ending for one of the most famous movie characters of the last decade.
