11. Billy, Amanda, Irene, & Dan - The Mist
Stories in both the horror and action genre have stacked their protagonists against seemingly insurmountable odds before, but for the most part they are overcome. However, what happens when these characters come into contact with an other-worldly foe, or rather multiple foes, being concealed right up until the moment of their attack?
This was the premise of The Mist. Said mist came over a small town with brutish monsters hiding within, appearing to torment and destroy anyone in the vicinity. How would you even begin to fight back against something like that?
While some took to making human sacrifices, Thomas Jane's David ultimately found himself out of options, and rather than face the horror that was hiding behind the wall of grey, he mercy-killed those in the car with him. There were five of them, including David himself, but only four bullets, and so he put the others out of their misery. This included Billy (Nathan Gamble), the man's own son.
Could anything have possibly made this moment any worse? How about the fact that mere seconds after putting a bullet into his young child and stepping out of the car to be taken by the monsters, David instead saw the mist retract to reveal the US army's rescue mission. In what is one of the most painful examples of the worst timing in movie history, had he just waited 30 seconds, his son would have lived.
