To say that he is arguably one of the greatest horror writers, not just of his generation, but of any generation, Stephen King is associated with two of the most incredibly emotional and powerful dramas of all time. The Green Mile has already been discussed on this list, and now we have what is widely regarded as one of the finest films in the history of cinema.

The Shawshank Redemption is a masterpiece, and while Andy Dufresne and Red (Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman) made for a compelling story, one of the movie's greatest scenes was based around one of its supporting characters, namely Brooks (James Whitmore).

The old man had been inside the walls of Shawshank for many, many years, and what should have been a happy occasion when he got released quickly turned into a devastating end for a man left alone in the world. Things were very different than the last time he was a part of society, and he simply couldn't, and didn't want to, keep up with it.

He was granted his "freedom", but his life changed to one without his friends, in a job that caused him pain, completely alone, scared, and confused. His suicide was something of a release for him, free from his so-called freedom, but there couldn't have been a dry eye in the house for anyone who had to watch it.
