50 Movie Death Scenes That Left You TRAUMATISED
6. Isla - 28 Years Later
It can sometimes be difficult to know what to expect when it comes to legacy sequels. Generally, there will be similarities, sometimes telling the same basic story, while others, like Top Gun: Maverick, can offer up a great surprise. Somewhere in the middle of this scale lies 28 Years Later.
Coming not quite 28, but 23 years after 28 Days Later, the legacy sequel didn't offer a huge amount of groundbreaking imagery for the franchise, but it did set itself apart on two fronts. There was the insane ending with Jack O'Connell's Sir Jimmy, and the heartbreaking death of Jodie Comer's Isla.
Death was, of course, all throughout the first two films in the series, but nothing like this. Isla, mother of Alfie Williams' Spike, was ill from the very beginning of the movie, but it wasn't until they found Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) on the mainland that he all but confirmed that she was suffering from cancer. There was nothing that could be done.
Spike risked his own life to try and save his mother's, but ultimately Dr. Kelson was able to give Isla a peaceful death after a gentle and meaningful final conversation with her son. Spike adding Isla's skull to the Bone Temple was a hauntingly beautiful moment, as finally she was able to find peace with an emotional scene unlike anything else in the trilogy.
