50 Movie Death Scenes That Left You TRAUMATISED

1. Rosie Betzler – Jojo Rabbit

In spite of being known for his inherently silly and goofy comedy style, something that was perfected with Thor: Ragnarok and taken way too far to the point of parodying itself in Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi has proven himself able to bring real emotional weight to a film.

In Jojo Rabbit, even Waititi's casting of himself as an imaginary Adolf Hitler wasn't able to take away from what is arguably one of the most devastating and shocking death scenes of all time. Namely, when the titular Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) discovered his mother's body.

Set during World War II, Jojo's mother Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) had been secretly harbouring a Jewish girl, something that carried the risk of death if she was caught. Earlier in the film, Rosie was walking along a wall with her shoes at Jojo's head height, something that wasn't exactly notable until much later in the film.

Distracted by a butterfly, Jojo wandered into the town square and only noticed his mother's shoes again at his head height when he was stood right next to them, only this time there was nothing underneath them. Rosie had been hanged, and this was how her son found her. No child should ever have to go through something like this, and the unapologetic abruptness of the scene, as well as Roman Griffin Davis' response as Jojo, made it unforgettable in both the best and worst ways.
