50 Movie Death Scenes That Left You TRAUMATISED
2. Ellie - Up
While Tony Stark's death in Avengers: Endgame hit so hard because he had been around for over ten years, Up brought about an incredible emotional response from killing off a character that audiences had known for less than ten minutes.
Pixar had already established a reputation of being able to evoke such feelings from audiences by 2009, but even so, absolutely nobody could have seen what was coming in the first few minutes of Up. A fun film about an old man's floating house? Sure. But not before traumatising everybody first.
The bulk of the story was based around grumpy old man, Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner), and his reluctant relationship with young Russell (Jordan Nagai). The first ten minutes however, showed exactly why he was grumpy and alone, and why his relationship with Russell ultimately became so meaningful.
Carl was madly in love with Ellie for his whole life, but as their story went on, it only grew sadder. Unable to have children of their own, Carl and Ellie grew old together before Ellie became ill and eventually passed away. In what was largely a wordless montage, it became clear how much the two meant to each other, and how crushing her death was. All this within the opening scenes of a movie aimed primarily at children was shocking and unbelievably depressing.
