50 Movies Where Evil Won
20. Ju-On: The Grudge
Plot: A curse created by a violent family murder infects a house, killing anyone who enters.
One of the defining features of this Japanese horror classic is its non-linear narrative, unfolding out of order and making the movie feel like a labyrinth the viewer is trapped in. That's rather appropriate, for in the Ju-On films, the characters are also trapped, and they've got no way out whatsoever.
Most supernatural horror movies do feature a way to beat the monster. In films such as The Exorcist and the Conjuring franchise, exorcisms will generally get rid of the demon. In fellow J-Horror classic Ring, making a copy of the cursed videotape and showing it to someone else will pass on the curse. In Ju-On, on the other hand? Nothing.
Once you enter the cursed household, that's it. There's no getting rid of the curse, and there's no escape. This continues throughout the rest of the franchise as well, with none of the many sequels ever offering a permanent solution to the Grudge. This curse is initially created by a violent series of murders in the house, so perhaps this was designed to be a fitting metaphor for the never-ending trauma such an event creates.
