50 Movies Where Evil Won
9. Hereditary
Plot: After Annie Graham's (Toni Collette) mother dies, it turns out that she was involved with a mysterious cult, one which begins to destroy Annie and her family.
If you decide to put on an Ari Aster film, you can generally be sure to expect two things: a story about an effed-up family, and an ending where evil wins. This was firmly established by his debut film, Hereditary.
The cult that Annie's mother, Ellen, was linked to is trying to resurrect a demon named Paimon by giving him a male host, but this host has to be part of Ellen's bloodline. As such, the cult is now aiming to possess Annie's son Peter (Alex Wolff), and ultimately, they succeed.
The members of the cult orchestrate the seemingly accidental death of Annie's daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro), and also trick the family into summoning a supernatural force through a seance designed to reach Charlie's spirit. This force possesses and kills both Annie and her husband, Steve (Gabriel Byrne). By this time, poor Peter is so psychologically broken that he's vulnerable enough to be possessed by Paimon, and he is crowned king by the cultists.
The final scenes of Hereditary were let down by some goofy visuals, but on a narrative level, this worked splendidly. Primarily, Hereditary is about family demons, how they are passed down, and how they destroy the younger generations who never asked for such an inheritance. Hereditary certainly hammered this home in an unforgettably dark manner.
