6 Crazy Lord Of The Rings Theories (And Why They Might Be True)
4. The Fate Of The Ent-Wives
One of Tolkein’s greatest illusions is that of the Ent-wives – the counterparts to the Ents who fled, never to be seen again in Middle Earth. The Ent-wives represent the true tragedy of the peaceful parties caught up in the War of the Rings: those who had their own freedom and power which was stripped away mercilessly. We never get to see the mystical creatures, and they’re never heard of again.
Fans conjure up magical endings to the tale of the Ent-wives to detract from the high probability that they were simply all enslaved and then slaughtered by Sauron - after all, we never hear from them again. One happier theory is that the trees head to the north where they found Eriador and its land filled with small trees, plants and greenery, and lived out the rest of their lives in peace.
Some also believe that few Ent-wives now reside within the Shire in Woody End. We know the trees of Woody End helped to guide the Hobbits towards Farmer Maggot and protect them, we also know that Sam felt a deep connection to the forest of the Shire. Maybe the Ent-Wives did have a happier fate.
