6 Film and TV Languages You Can Actually Speak

2. Avatar: Na'vi

Fifth Element
20th Century Fox

With 15 years of world-building underway before the film hit screens, it would be a real disappointment for something as integral as the Na'vi language to have been ignored. Bringing together a paraplegic marine and a world of blue cat people with the use of 'avatar' technology, the film is essentially about exploring a new, alien, tail-sexing culture in the depths of space. So it's only fair they have their very own new, alien, tail-sexing language to go along with it.

Constructed of Ethiopian and New Zealand Māori, it was devised by University of Southern California linguist Dr. Paul Frommer, who apparently was so excited at the prospect of being involved he exclaimed ”We’re going to beat Klingon! We’re going to out-Klingon Klingon! We’re going to have a more detailed and well thought out language than Klingon!” I think he really likes Star Wars. Oops, sorry, Star Gate.

He now has the lexicon at well over 1000 words, with more being added continuously so fans can really nail their love letters to James Cameron. Me included.
