6 More Forgotten Films From the 80’s You’ve Probably Never Heard Of
3. Cloak And Dagger (1984)
Cloak and Dagger was a remake of a 1949 film titled "The Window" and starred Dabney Coleman (Boardwalk Empire) and Henry Thomas in his follow-up to ET. It is the story of young Davey Osborne, whom following the death of his mother escapes into a fantasy world where he becomes the associate of "super spy," Jack Flack, a character from an Atari game (another awesome 80's tech reference).
During one of his "missions," he accidentally stumbles into a government conspiracy when upon witnessing a murder, receives a video game cartridge that he has been told contains military secrets. Using Jack Flack as his guide he continuously evades his would be captors, and along the way not only learns a few valuable lessons about life but also reconnects with his estranged father.
This coming of age story was my generations "Spy Kids" and was a regular fixture in my household upon its release on VHS. Initially part a double feature with "the Last Starfighter" (I myself saw both at the neighbouring towns drive-in),it went on to become a commercial success and garnered quite a fan base following its video transfer.
But sadly, it too has become a victim of time, as nowadays it is not only overshadowed by the success of the Robert Rodriguez saga, but has seemingly been forgotten by the very same generation that made this so popular in the first place. It definitely has not stood the test of time in terms of popularity, unlike Henry Thomas's other unforgettable movie moment.
'Cloak and Dagger" stimulated the imaginations of a lot of us 80's kids back in the day and quite rightfully deserves a revisit by those same children who are now adults and may have families of their own. It would certainly be more beneficial to a child's development than one of those Michael Bay travesties.
