6 Star Trek Tie-In Novels That Should’ve Been Films

5. Any Trek Novel Published Before 1987

Star Trek novels for the original series

Movie being replaced: The Final Frontier

This is a bit of a cheat, because I€™m not recommending a specific book, but that€™s okay given how bad Star Trek V was. As much as William Shatner and Star Trek V€™s defenders would to deny it, the movie€™s real problem is that the story just doesn€™t work in the confines of Star Trek (although the VFX problems are a totally valid point). Given Paramount€™s demands for a lighter film along the lines of Star Trek IV and my lack of familiarity with the novels of the era, I decided to go with a shotgun spread approach to this one €“ at least one novel has to fit their criteria, even if it would need extensive rewrites. And this blurb for The Trellisane Confrontation certainly seems like the kind of story that could be given a comedic bent:

The USS Enterprise has rushed to war-torn Trellisane! Kirk is on the bridge of a Klingon warship, McCoy is dining with cannibals, and the ship is surrounded by Romulans. In the Neutral Zone, power is up for grabs. Now only the ingenuity and raw courage of the Enterprise crew can avert catastrophe!
