It’s becoming more and more common to see the origins of a superhero’s respective suit these days. While it’s always been important to the likes of Batman, Iron Man and Spider-Man’s arc, the movies have focussed on grounded realism that’s shown us the origin or design of Black Panther’s and Superman’s too.

In Suicide Squad, though we see her being handed her costume over (and then changing into it in full view of everyone), we know little of its origin. It’s clearly tailored and personalised, but where she got it is a mystery. There’s room for suspension of disbelief: an unusual jacket is not immersion breaking in a movie with a man who shoots flames from his tattoos, after all.

This costume looks, if anything, more elaborate though, and it has a homemade, punk feel to it. Despite being set in the present day, there’s an 80s vibe to the whole thing, with the big pom-pom shoulders. While we’re unlikely to get a tedious scene of her darning each and every tassel to her jacket, this could be her breaking away from her clownish/jester persona, making a more conscious decision about how she looks.
