1. Khan (Star Trek Into Darkness)
Among the plethora of things a lot of Trekkies (or Trekkers) are angry about in Star Trek Into Darkness, most notably stealing characters and ideas wholesale and the now infamous gratuitous underwear scene, the stupidest thing of all in the opinion of many was making Benedict Cumberbatchs character Khan at all. Obviously they didnt go down the whole being-true-to-his-traditional-ethnicity route. There was also absolutely no mention of his true mission (the one that hes famous for) until near the end, and even then Spock Prime only mentions it in passing. Khan is calling himself John Harrison to hide his identity, but there arent any believable reasons for him to need to hide his real name: he isnt famous and he happily tells Kirk the truth when hes good and ready. Unless there is an excellent sequel plan that were not aware of that will progress Khans story further, this whole façade was a waste of time. The plot was apparently written before Khan was shoehorned in, but this questionable plan provides no payoff whatsoever. With rumours of Benedict Cumberbatchs characters true identity all over the internet before the films release, the John Harrison tease started in order to put people off the scent- not that it worked. John Harrison could easily have been an effective villain without this whole charade: the backstory about freezing and his loyalty to his crew are still good reasons to make him angry and spur him on to this chain of events. It might even have relieved the fans confusion, disappointment and anger at the misuse of such an iconic character.
