7 Essential Old Movies For Modern Audiences

4. Rom-Com - Move Over, Darling (1963)

Move Over Darling Move Over, Darling is a romantic comedy for the ages. Doris Day plays a woman who was declared dead after having gone missing in the aftermath of an airplane crash. When she comes home five years later, she finds that her adoring husband (a very young and devilishly handsome James Garner), who was a survivor of the plane crash, has already gone through the grieving process and, freshly married to another woman, is on his way to enjoying their honeymoon. Rather than approaching him in a normal fashion, Day€™s character follows Garner and his newly beloved to a hotel where hilarity ensures. A remake of the film My Favorite Wife from 1940, this film is delightful. The bulk of it centers around the night at the hotel where James Garner is in the middle of a delicate balancing act, spending as much time with his old wife as possible without his new wife getting suspicious. It really is a cute story and Doris Day€™s trademarked sweetness makes the film€™s conclusion an all around feel good ending. What€™s great is that this film is good for all ages. The hotel craziness is very much like a romp of sorts and the dialogue is completely enchanting.
