7 Films That Make Interesting Points On Society
3. CAM - Perceptions Of Sex Workers
For the last few years, representation for sex workers has been carefully explored in a series of documentaries and podcasts that have been both in-depth and unbiased;
Netflix's psychological drama CAM (written by a former webcam model) has presented us with not just a glimpse into the concerns surrounding deep-fakes and identity theft, but casts a light on some of the unpleasant and awkward struggles webcam models might/will encounter in their careers.
Some noteworthy scenes include a police officer immediately assuming Alice (Madeline Brewer) is promiscuous because of her profession, later being exposed as a webcam model to her brother and his leering friends, and a meeting with an entitled fan that quickly turns tense and hostile.
The film implores audiences to start empathizing with the women (and men) on camera who perform for our pleasure. CAM makes a very strong argument that sex workers are not respected like less taboo professionals; and even though porn sites are visited by millions of people every hour of every day, the performers themselves aren't regarded as human beings at all.
For all the troubles Alice endures throughout, it's strange that so many people rely on her for their satisfaction, but wouldn't consider her a person.
