7 Great Harry Potter Plot Twists That Don’t Get Enough Credit
1. Rita Skeeter Is An Animagus – The Goblet Of Fire
This is yet another great plot twist that didn't make it to the big screen. In the final chapter of The Goblet of Fire, Hermione reveals Rita Skeeter is an Animagus who can turn into a beetle.
As with many of Rowling’s great plot twists, the foreshadowing is excellent.
During the night of the Yule Ball, Harry notices a beetle crawling on a statue outside the Great Hall. Similarly, after the Second Task, Krum removes what he believes to be a ‘water-beetle’ from Hermione’s hair.
There’s also an insect on the windowsill when Harry collapses in Divination, and soon after, Rita publishes an article that portrays Harry as ‘disturbed and dangerous’.
What’s more, it’s fun to see Hermione get revenge. Previously in the story, Rita published an article depicting Hermione as a promiscuous girl who left Harry to pursue Krum. As such, it’s great when she tells Harry and Ron the truth and reveals a small glass jar with a beetle trapped inside.
In essence, this plot twist ties up the subplot of Rita Skeeter’s villainy and her unexplainable ability to know things she shouldn’t. And whilst this subplot isn’t essential to the main story, the way it concludes is wonderfully satisfying.
