Though Kevin Feige will tell you endlessly that the MCU was planned intricately from the very earliest days, with the Infinity Wars saga designed to be the first defining story arc, he didn't have his Thanos cast until Guardians Of The Galaxy.

By then, the Mad Titan had already appeared once - in the post-credits scene after The Avengers - and while it wasn't a speaking role, the character looked a fair bit like the final version who arrived properly in Infinity War. But it wasn't Josh Brolin behind the effects work, it was stuntman Damion Poitier, who stood in for Brolin's impressive chin.

When it came to fleshing him out, though, Marvel went with a more familiar, dependable name.
