7 Plots And Plot Devices That The DCU Needs To Avoid

4. Don€™t Go Into Space

Whilst Man of Steel introduced us to Krypton and we€™ve already established that Darkseid shouldn€™t be allowed anywhere near the newest Batman and Superman and their friends. DC has a real job on its hands of establishing a shared cinematic universe of characters without looking too much like they€™re copying Marvel. The characters are easy enough to set apart, but it€™s the settings and styles that they need to be careful of shadowing too closely. Given the success of Guardians of the Galaxy it€™s arguable that DC really need to keep its characters safely on Terra Firma and as free of extra aliens as possible. Guardians works because it€™s so far removed from the regular MCU. Meanwhile Thor trod a similar path as Man of Steel in having a singular alien arrive on our planet before teaming up with others. To make a space adventure within the DCU would look cynical at best and churlish at worst, whilst introducing characters like the Martian Manhunter would totally rob Superman of what makes him unique. If it€™s to compete with Marvel long-term then DC needs to be more innovative and recognise where the two giants clash, picking fights carefully and carving out its own path. Banking on off the wall titles like Suicide Squad and unseen ideas like Aquaman are a good start.
