5. Jonathan Kent Sacrifices Himself - Man of Steel
The Decision: During a tornado, Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) sticks to his maxim that a young Clark cannot use his powers out in the open until he's ready, so as a result, Jonathan sacrifices himself, killed in the freak tornado, while Clark simply looks on in horror.
Why It's Stupid: Aside from the fact that this is an enormous emotional trauma for any kid (or adult) to go through, it seems like a pretty idealistic reason to sacrifice your life. Alright, so someone might see Clark zip in and out and save his father, but in the heat of a tornado, wouldn't it be a little easier to cover up than, say, the prior schoolbus incident? It's easy to understand a father laying down his life for his son, but didn't this seem a little...over the top?
