Although it has to be said that the most popular superhero movies include the biggest superhero names - Batman, Iron Man and Spider-Man to name a few - there are a multitude of other films in this category that are undeniably just as good.

On the Hollywood screen, we expect the big fights and the hero to always win the day. But with other superhero films, the possibilities are endless, as they don't have to fit in the Marvel and DC prototype.

They can combine the ever growing popular genre with horror, thriller or comedy, and create animations that follow a range of core themes that may not be explored in the next comic book movie.

DC has been stepping out of the box the last few years to create more out-there colourful content to mixed reviews. Some of these films are more well known than others, but all deserve to take credit for being unique in this debatably overdone genre.

Here is a list of just some super films that should definitely make it on everyone's watch list, if they are beginning to tire of the same big names on the big screen.

7. Chronicle

Chronicle takes the top spot as the perfect combination of the famous genre and more darker tones.

Released in 2012, the film is found footage style and follows a group of teens who stumble upon an underground discovery that leaves them in possession of superhuman powers. Soon after using these for the greater good, the narrative takes a turn for the worst, as the kids fight for control within themselves and each other.

Featuring actors Michael B. Jordan and Dane DeHaan, the movie blends sci-fi and horror with superheroes, fit for a more adult audience at a 12 A age rating for more gruesome scenes in the third act.

There are a multitude of scares and tense moments that leave audiences wanting more after ninety minutes. The action is all filmed on the character's cameras, putting the audience right in with the action itself in a documentary type vision which in turn creates a sense of genuine risk within the more shocking unpredictable moments.

Fans of superheroes and horror should definitely watch this movie immediately to envision the consequences of what having superpowers could have in a close to real world situation.
